Overview

WideStream6 is the latest and most complete edition in the line of Widestream download managers. Widestream6 is a download manager and FTP explorer that can be used to effectively manage your downloads from HTTP and FTP resources.

WideStream allows you to download several files at a time, open multiple connections (up to 20) to a single file in order to accelerate your download speed, to resume broken downloads, to download from servers that require authorization and much more.

WideStream was designed with simplicity in mind. We try to keep the learning curve as low as possible and for that reason the user interface and behavior of the program is much alike other download managers.

At the same time, WideStream offers a lot of advanced features for power users such as flexible queue management that allows you to fully control the current number of active downloads and the number of connections per download, to change the number of opened connections per file on the fly without the need to restart a download, to manage traffic usage, configure work through SSL protocol and so forth.

In other word if you just need to get your file all you need to do is to click one button, if you need to do it with the full control over the process you have all the tools you might require.

Installation and first time configuration

WideStream requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5. .NET Framework is a modern platform for Windows applications. Version 3.5 is not shipped with any current version of Windows but it may be downloaded through Windows Update if you have it enabled. You can also download it from the Microsoft site (http://www.microsoft.com/net/Download.aspx) and install it manually. If you have any questions or problems considering .NET Framework installation please feel free to contact us or to create a support request.

When the application is first launched it creates a folder WideStream inside My Documents (in XP and earlier versions) folder or inside Documents (in Vista and higher versions). Inside a WideStream folder there is a Downloads folder which is used by default to store all your downloaded files (you can however change this behavior through the configuration dialog).

Also, WideStream creates a key in a registry - HKEY LOCAL USER\Software\WideStream - that is used to consolidate the view state of a program (such as size and position of a main window, etc.). If you are experiencing problems with an application or you simply want to reverse all settings back to default you can delete the program configuration file and a registry key. But bear in mind that you will lose all your settings, FTP explorer history and hosts registered in a host manager.

Main application window

Main application window is what you see when you launch WideStream.

This window includes the following elements:
  • Menu bar, which provides you access to all application functionality. Menu bar may change depending on the current mode of an application (i.e. download manager or FTP explorer) but you will always have an access to general features (such as View and menu application configuration).

Application toolbar give a quick access some of the core features available in download manager

You can manage queue, add or remove downloads, control active downloads, filter downloads list and launch URL Crawler.

Navigation Window and Tags

The Navigation Window allows you to filter downloads in the download queue. WideStream can effectively handle hundreds of downloads – no need to remove old downloads once you finished downloading a file. If the file is lost you always can download it again by preserving a link in the WideStream download queue.

The Navigation Window has four sections – Display Downloads, Show Only, File Types and Tags

  • Display Downloads section allows you to choose for which time period the downloads will be showing – by default it is one week, you can choose a month, two months, two or three days old or just for today.
  • Show only section allows you to choose which downloads to show – active, paused, failed, stopped or completed.
  • File Types section allows you to choose the type of the download shown – video, music, software, web pages, pictures, etc.
  • Tags section can be used to filter the list of downloads by custom tags.

All the filters from the Navigation Window can be combined, i.e. you can show only two days old music downloads that were paused.

The Tags section allows you to filter downloads using so called download tags. These are categories that can be assigned to each download through the download dialog:

You can specify one or several tags separated by a semicolon. All your tags will be displayed in the Tags section. You can choose multiple tags at a time – and all downloads that match these tags will be shown. If a download doesn't have a tag it will be hidden. Or you can choose to display all download s by checking an All option and you will see all downloads that have or don't have tags associated with them.

URL Crawler

URL Crawler allows you to scan sites for links and displays these links in the list so you can either copy them to clipboard or download in WideStream. URL Crawler can be launched by clicking the URL Crawler button on a toolbar or by selecting an appropriate item in the Download menu.

URL Crawler has a simple and flexible user interface. You can enter a link like http://contoso.com/linkPage.aspx in the Links field and optional mask in the mask field. Mask allows you to use wildcards to filter out the list of scanned URLs. For example, if you enter *.jpg mask URL Crawler will only look for images. If you enter *mysite.com* mask it will only look for the links to the site called mysite.com.

After that you can click a Crawl URL button. If the URL Crawler finds any links that match your search criteria it will display them in a Links list:

You can choose desired links by clicking a check box nearby each link (right clicking the link list will open a context menu that allows you select or deselect all links). When any of the links are selected you can hit either the Copy button that copies links to the clipboard or the Download button that opens a download dialog with your links in it.

Host Manager

Host manager (this is accessible from the main menu: Tools -> Host manager) is used to save settings specific to concrete hosts. For example, you may wish to download from rapidshare only in 3 connections, to use HTTP 1.0 instead of 1.1 and of course to set up your premium account credentials. If you have it configured each time you will be downloading from rapidshare the settings for rapidshare from host manager will be applied by default.

Host manager window is a grid that displays all registered host managers. By default this grid shows Host Name, Description, Timeout, Error Limit, Priority and Maximum Connections. You can choose display columns from the Tools -> Options dialog or by right clicking the column headers:

Host manager adds the following items to the main menu:

Edit menu:
  • Copy selected host names – copy the names of the selected hosts into clip board.
  • Copy all host names – copy the names of all hosts into clipboard
Host Manager menu:
  • Register a new host – opens a dialog that allows you to add a new host and to configure host details.
  • Remove selected host – removes a currently selected host
  • Host properties – opens a properties window for a currently selected host that allows you to changes host details.

The Application toolbar gives quick access to some of the core features available in host manager:

You can add, remove and edit and an existing host using toolbar buttons. When you add or change an existing host you are working with, the dialog window that is similar to the one that is used to add downloads in download manager. The dialog that is used to manage host details is organized using a tabbed page control. The first two pages are Host and General.

The Host page allows you to specify major host details such as host name, a description that can be used for reference purposes and credentials. Remember that you should enter only host names and domain names in the host name field - not URLs. For example, rapidshare.com is a correct entry while http://rapidshare.com is not. You can also use wildcards in domain names. For example, *.sourceforge.net will match all domains under sourceforge.net including widestream.sourceforge.net but not the sourceforge.net itself. But *sourceforge.net will match all domains that end with sourceforge.net (in our case both widestream.sourceforge.net and sourceforge.net itself).

The General page allows you to configure general download properties. By default all controls on this page (as well as all controls on subsequent pages) are displayed. It means that default settings will be used. If you want to override default settings check a check box nearby to the name of the setting - and it will be enabled. The settings on this page are similar to the settings that you can see on the Settings tab when adding the new download - with the only exception being that you can also specify a download path here.

Other pages in the host manager dialog represent protocol settings. By default these are FTP and HTTP protocols. These settings are similar to the settings that you can see in the Configure Download dialog.

FTP Explorer

FTP Explorer allows you to browse remote FTP directories using an interface similar to the one that you can see in Windows file explorer. FTP Explorer includes a main window with folders and file view, log window that displays statistics for current connections, a menu and a toolbar with an Address bar where you can enter links to the FTP directories:

FTP Explorer mode adds the following items to the main application menu:

Edit menu:
  • Copy File URL - copy an URL of the currently selected file to the clipboard
  • Copy All File URL - copy URLs of all files and folders in the current view
FTP Manager menu:
  • Download selected files - open a Configure Downloads dialog with the files that are currently selected
  • Open FTP - open an FTP directory that is currently entered in an Address bar
  • Move level up - move to the parent FTP directory (this item will be disabled if you are in the root FTP directory)
  • Stop connecting - cancel the current request
  • Refresh current folder - refreshes the currently opened FTP directory
  • Set Credentials - open a dialog to configure FTP credentials

FTP Explorer toolbar contains an address bar that allows you to enter links to FTP directories and a couple of buttons for quick access to some of the items from FTP Manager menu:

The Address bar keeps the history of browsed FTP folders. You can select a previously opened FTP by expanding the address dropdown. The icon at the left of the address bar identifies the status of the current request. You will see a check mark as in the screen shot above if an FTP Toga toga toga directory was successfully opened. If WideStream fails it will display a different icon:

You can hover your mouse pointer over this icon to see the details of the error message. You can also see an error message in the log window. The other buttons available on a toolbar are: Open (to open FTP directory entered in the Address bar), Move Level Up, Stop Connection, Refresh and Set Credentials.

If you click the Set Credentials button it will open the following dialog:

By default if you don't check the Specify login and password check box you connect under the anonymous credentials. If you want to specify the user name and password for a specific FTP check the check box and enter your credentials in the User Name and Password text areas.

Program options

WideStream configuration dialog can be either opened using the Options button on a toolbar or via Tools -> Options menu. The Options dialog is split into several sections

General section contains settings that affect all application modes:
  • Environment. This page contains settings that allow you to change user interface language, UI settings, visual theme, minimize action (you can disable the hide in tray feature that is enabled by default) and choose which prompt dialogs will be shown.

Command line parameters

You can launch WideStream6 with command line parameters that allow you to control the application. For example with command line parameters you can integrate WideStream with FlashGot or with any browser that supports external download managers but is not supported by WideStream itself.

WideStream supports the following command line parameters:
  • -url - this parameter allows to pass an URL to WideStream. For example, widestream.exe -url http://site.com/file.zip. You can enclose URL in quotes but this is not mandatory. When this parameter is used WideStream will automatically show Add Download dialog with the supplied link. If WideStream is already running it will still show this dialog.
  • -minimize - this parameter is used to lunch WideStream in minimized form. It will not show its main window - but you will a WideStream icon in the tray area. You can use this parameter if you want to configure WideStream to be launched at system startup.
  • -log - this parameter is used to support error logging feature. You should provide a path to the log file - i.e. widestream.exe -log C:\temp\log.txt. You should enclose the path to the file in quotes if it contains spaces. Error log will contain dump of all errors including download errors and application errors.
